The Senate has set up a conference committee to mediate with the House of Representatives to resolve differences in the work of the two chambers on the amendment to the 1999 Constitution.

As announced by Senate President Bukola Sarakiduring the plenary on Thursday, theseven-man committee include Senate LeaderAhmad Lawan (APC Yobe). Other are: Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP Abia), Bala Na’allah (APC, Kebbi), Dino Melaye (APC Kogi), Magnus Abe (APC Rivers), and Biodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti).

The DeputySenatePresident, Ike Ekweremadu (PDP Enugu) is the chairman of the committee.

However, there were several contentious amendment clauses that were either approved or rejected by each chamber, which include: the reduction of age limits for elective offices (Not-too-Young-to-Run), 35 percent affirmative action for women in appointive positions, appointment of a Minister from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, citizenship and indigeneship, and deletion of State Independent National Electoral Commission from Constitution.

Others are: removal of lawmaking powers from the executive arm on the National Youth Service Corps, the National Security Agency Act, the National Electoral Complaints Commission and the Land Use Act.

The Senate also announced the indefinite postponement of the National Security Summit previously scheduled to hold on January 24.

This followed the citing Order 53(6)by theSenate Leader who sought a two-week extension of the summit.

Lawal said the extension would allow the ad-hoc committee to plan properly and hold a worthwhile summit, saying that a new date would be communicated as soon as possible.

The Senate had previously resolved to suspend plenary for two days for it to hold the summit, which will focus on farmers-herdsmen's clashes, kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes.

The Senate’s ‎resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Ewkeremadu, who also warned that if something urgent was not done, terrorists would soon overrun the country. ‎ ‎

The Senate also urged Federal Government to deploy more security forces in the areas affected by herdsmen crisis.
