There was palpable tension in Dadin Kowa and Gyel areas of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State yesterday following the alleged killing of nine hunters at Gero village near Jos.

It was gathered that some youths who had gone hunting on Sunday night were killed by unknown gunmen at Gero village and the corpses of three of them were recovered from the forest.

As soon as the news of their death broke, youths from Dadin Kowa took to the street, burning tyres which disrupted the free flow of traffic around the community.

It took the efforts of security personnel to disperse the mob.

This development affected business activities around the communities as most shop owners hurriedly closed their shops and headed for their various homes.

An eyewitness, Mr. Mark Lipdo, said the youths went on rampage and blocked the major road leading to Bukuru, claiming that nine hunters were killed.

When contacted, the state Police Commissioner, Chris Olakpe, confirmed the incidence but said only one corpse was found.

He further said: “Yes, there was tension around the area yesterday afternoon but our men swung into action and were able to restore normalcy to the communities.”

There was heavy presence of security operatives in most streets of Jos, especially as local government elections hold today in the state.
