Demonstrating Rivers students
Rivers State stakeholders on Monday stormed the United Kingdom-based Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) protesting the visit of the state’s Governor, Nyesom Wike, for a lecture on Sustainable Development.
The students carried placards with different inscriptions to express their grouse with the Governor.
Late last week, some groups - Public Eye on Democracy (PED) and Lawyers’ Network for the Prevention of Electoral Violence (LANPEV) - had jointly released a press statement on how such a highly respected think-tank like Chatham House could offer its platform for a Governor they described as a "discredited politician."
The groups recalled the period before, during and after the elections in the state when violent killings and political assassinations marred the election process and provided information on how the Wike allegedly bribed some members of the Nigeria Police and electoral officials.
Demanding that the Governor needed to define ‘Development’, some of the placards read: “What is sustainable development when there is no human development?”; “Mr Wike, do not abandon the RSSDA project, please pay our fees.”
