The Rotary International District 9142, Awka, Anambra State,has declared its resolve to fight polio through a campaign on ‘Polio Eradication’ until it is completely eradicated from the society.

Speaking at a press conference in Awka,Pharm. Emman Ude Akpeh, who will on Saturdaybe installed as the new District Governor for 2017/2018 said that there was no reason for a child to be down with polio in the present day world, adding that the organisation will take the case head on “until there is no more case of the disease.”

The District 9142 Governor observed that Polio only existed in three countries of the world today, namely Pakistan, Afghanistan and unfortunately Nigeria, noting that the scourge had already been reduced from 10,000 to 46.

He said that Rotary District 9142 which also operates in all the South East states and Akwa-Ibom have as part of their programme for the period to honour the first Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Late Prof. Kenneth Dike with a 40 feet container load of books of various disciplines and stock it in the libraries to encourage excellence in education.

According to him, the District will be hosting seven states in Anambra State even as there will also be tree planting at Prof. Kenneth Dike library in Awka.

Akpeh added that the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka, would in a short time receive a team ofmedical doctors from America to embark on free health care for two weeks at the expense of Rotary International.

“Not only that, the members of the club equally render other services which include donation of blood to various hospitals, provision of water, protection of the environment, mother/child health care, among others.

“Twice yearly, Rotary sponsors open heart surgery on children at no cost.

“Rotary International members would kick start the event today (Friday) with a sensitisation march round Awka and the tree planting, while the inauguration of the new Governor would take placeon Saturday.”
