Osun Bye-Election: Senate urges INEC to ensure fairness, calls on Police, DSS to beef up security

Senator Duro Faseyi

The Senate on Thursday ‎resolved to urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure equity, fairness and transparency in forthcoming Osun West Senatorial district bye-election.‎

‎‎The lawmakers also advised the Nigerian Police, DSS, and other relevant agencies to offer the highest level of security and ensure no-one involved in election malpractice.

‎‎The Senate resolutions followed a point of order raised by Senator Duro Faseyi, who cited order 42 and 52 while speaking about ensuring free and fair elections during the Osun West Senatorial District election.‎

‎The senate warned all voters, media, ‎stakeholders and participants not to engage in election malpractice,‎ also called on indigenes of Osun West to come out and exercise their right to vote.

‎‎‎The Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who seconded the motion reiterated the need to achieve a free and fair election.

‎In his remarks the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said the Electoral body must ensure the election is properly run, as to see their readiness for the 2019 general election.‎

Recall that following the sudden death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke, Senator representing Osun-West senatorial constituency on 23 April, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixed July 8 for bye-election to elect a senator to replace the deceased Senator for the constituency.‎
