Exclusive: What UNIPORT student lynched over “phone theft” said about false accusers

He may not have foreseen the gruesome manner of his death but Tekena Elkanah, the 200 level University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student lynched last Friday morning alongside three fellow students for allegedly stealing telephone handsets and laptops, did worry about false accusers.

News Express can reveal this morning that Tekena was so worried about false allegations that he made postings about it on his Facebook page.

On February 11 last year, Tekena, who loved hardcore hip hop, playing football and meeting lovely women, posted a framed photograph that said: “The SHIT you hear about me, might be true, but then again, it might be as FAKE as the BITCH who told you.”

He was to repeat the posting exactly five months later on July 11. News Express could not confirm the allegations that got the Kalio-Ama, Okrika native so worried that he had to repeat the post.

News Express recalls that Tekena (shown in photo) had been extra-judicially killed alongside three friends – Chiadikobi Biringa, Ugonna and Llyod – after being accused of theft by the vigilante group of Aluu community of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, where several UNIPORT students live in off-campus accommodations.

Outrage has greeted their murder and Governor Rotimi Amaechi has ordered the immediate arrest of the murderers.

Yesterday, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ben Ugbuegbulam, announced that the police had arrested 13 of those suspected to have joined in perpetrating the dastardly act.

He said in a statement: “The Rivers State Police Command unequivocally condemns the gruesome killing of four UNIPORT students on Friday by an irate mob from Aluu community.

“The command sympathises with the families of the slain students and also appeals to them not to take the laws into their hands.

“Students of UNIPORT are urged not to engage in any reprisal attack as such could lead to chaos and anarchy.

“The command has commenced diligent investigation into the ugly incident and an amazing success has been recorded in that regard, as 13 persons, including the chief of the community suspected to have been involved in the reprehensible and barbaric act have been arrested, based on credible intelligence and video clips of the killings.

“The suspects are being interrogated by crack detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Division, SCID.

“The Rivers police command is unwaveringly committed to protecting life and property of people of Rivers State and will not rest on its oars until the perpetrators of the horrendous act are not only arrested, but also brought to justice.”
