Nigeria’s central government and the 36 states, as well as the 774 local governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are smiling to the bank following the sharing of N35,549,235,691.43 being fuel subsidy savings for December 2013.
Figures released by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation showed that the Federal Government and FCT got N16,292,783,505.15 while the 36 states shared N12,885,318,165.66 and the local governments shared N6,371,134,020.62.
The Subsidy Savings for the month is based on benchmark of $79/barrel and at partial subsidy phase out of N97 per litre, according to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The biggest beneficiaries are Akwa Ibom, N1,762,542,033.58; Delta, N1,185,746,160.27; Rivers, N1,095,051,393.90; and Bayelsa, N1,051,984,034.75.
At the other end of the ladder are Ebonyi, N194,966,873.26; Ekiti, N194,856,854.59; Kwara, N193,988,107.42; and Osun, N198,753,135.55.
Commenting on why details of how the money was shared were made public, Coordinating Minister for the Economy & Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said: “At the inception of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), the Jonathan administration made solemn commitment to the transparent and accountable implementation of the programme.”
