Presidency reacts to Mubi massacre, says no cause for alarm

Nigerians have no need to panic over the activities of Boko Haram despite today’s deadly attack on the Federal Polytechnic at Mubi, Adamawa State, in the country’s North East, as the Jonathan administration is equal to the task of containing the violent Islamic sect, a presidential spokesman has said.

Reacting to the dawn attack which left at least 26 students dead and 15 others injured, the senior special assistant to the President on Public affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said a few minutes ago in an interview with the BBC that President Goodluck Jonathan is doing enough to checkmate Boko Haram.

“There is nowhere in the history of the world where local insurgency has been brought under much control at the rate at which it has happened in Nigeria,” Okupe said. “We are dealing with a very serious sect, the Boko Haram sect,” he added.

Unidentified gunmen believed to be members of Bokon Haram had early this morning stormed the off-campus accommodations of students in the Yelwan Tsamiya area of Mubi, allegedly called out a list of names and then opened fire.

The incident has outraged Nigerians, who see it as yet another evidence that the Jonathan administration has lost grip of the security situation, but the government apparently feels otherwise.
