A NAF Jet on counter-insurgency duty
The Nigerian Air Force says it has successfully destroyed an artillery piece belonging to the Boko Haram Insurgents in Sambisa forest.
Sambisa was the major hideout of the militant sect before the Nigerian Army dislodged them.
The Air Force in a statement by its spokesman, Olatokunbo Adesanya, said the insurgents were planning to sneak the weapon into the Sambisa forest in order to intensify their attacks.
He said the weapon, which was concealed under a tree, was sighted by Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft while on daytime patrol.
On sighting the artillery, “the crew on board the ISR platform therefore immediately called for air strikes by NAF combat platforms. Following the alert, one Alpha Jet and one F-7Ni fighter aircraft were scrambled for air interdiction on the artillery piece.”
“Thereafter, the Alpha Jet aircraft strafed the area with rockets and the general location of the artillery piece was completely engulfed in an inferno,” the statement added.
The Airforce stated that the operation is part of efforts to flush out the remnants of Boko Haram Terrorists in the northeast region. (TV360 Nigeria)
