The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed that computers, vital documents and 10 offices of the control department were gutted by theTuesday morning fire at its Kaduna zonal office but no examination papers were affected in the fire.

The fire outbreak which erupted around10:00 amTuesdaymorning allegedly affected 10 offices in the control department and destroyed sets of computer and other vital documents.

Fidelis Gayan, Deputy Zonal Coordinator in charge of the Kaduna office while briefing journalists, said he was around when the incident occurred “and no human casualty was recorded during the inferno.”

Gayan said even though the cause of the fire outbreak was yet to be ascertained, examination papers were not affected.

He said fire fighters were successful in putting out the fire after the information got to them.

A senior security source told our reporter that the fire started around9:10 a.m.on Tuesdayat its zonal office along Kaduna/Zaria Road, Kawo, Kaduna.

“We received a distress call this morning of a fire incident at some offices of the Kaduna WEAC zonal office.

“10 offices were affected by the fire, which has been put under control by the combined efforts of the Fire Service and other security outfits. No cause for alarm.

“We suspect the fire was caused by electrical problem,” the source said.

An official of the WAEC office who does not want his name mentioned because he had no authority to speak to journalists while confirming the incident said the offices affected are the exams office and administrative offices.

Spokesperson of Kaduna State Police Command, Aliyu Usman, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to him.
