Abia Speaker Chikwendu Kalu
Some constituents from Isiala Ngwa South state constituency are pushing for the resignation of their representative and Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, who is barely two months in office.
Kalu became the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly after the impeachment of Rt. Hon. Martins Azubuike and the resignation of Rt. Hon. Kennedy Njoku, less than 24 hours after he was elected by his colleagues to replace Azubuike.
But the proponents of the Speaker’s resignation have threatened to start the process to recall him if he fails to resign for allegedly pulling a wool over the eyes of the people of Isiala Ngwa.
Six persons in the fore-front of the Kalu-must-resign campaign said the Speaker has allegedly brought shame to the people of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government by hiding from them, his alleged indictment by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) which directed
that his name be removed from the roll of legal practitioners in the country for conducting himself in an infamous professional manner.
The concerned group comprising Irondi O. Victor, Otuonye Alozie, Udo Ngobi,SundayOnyendi, Chief Udo Mba and Bridget Abel, who endorsed a document made available to newsmen in UmuahiaTuesdaysaid they were miffed by recent revelations that the Speaker was found guilty by the LPDC in 2013 and directed that his name be struck off from the roll of legal practitioners in Nigeria.
According to them, a client was said to have given Kalu, as his lawyer, the sum of N1.2 million, in 2007 to buy a property for him in Aba. Kalu was said to have kept the money for about two weeks and thereafter reported that the money was stolen from his office at Bines Hotels and accused his client and the property owner of perpetrating the theft.
The client petitioned NBA, Aba Branch, over Kalu’s alleged breach of trust. The branch was said to have found him guilty and advised him to repay the money, same advice the Police that investigated the matter was said to have given.
Kalu allegedly refused and the case was tabled before the LPDC which also was said to have found him guilty and recommended that his name be struck off from the register of legal practitoners in Nigeria.
They contended that this fact was hidden from the people of the Local Government in the run-up to the 2015 general elections when Kalu put himself forward for election into the House of Assembly.
The concerned Isiala Ngwa South citizens apologized to the public on Kalu’s behalf for the deceit and disrepute the Speaker has allegedly brought upon the people.
“We, therefore, call on him to not to wait to be recalled but to voluntarily resign his position as member representing the good people of Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency,” the group said.
When contacted through the telephone, the Speaker dismissed the move, saying those involved were meddlesome interlopers. He said that he would not comment on his indictment by the LPDC since the matter was pending before a court of law.
