Senate has called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to conduct a thorough investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the Ile-Ife dispute and ensure prompt prosecution of the culprits.

The Upper Chamber made the appeal during Tuesday plenary, demanding that while the IGP should as much as humanly possible try to prevent a re-occurrence of such dispute in Ile-Ife or anywhere else in the country.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau of Kano North, on the ethnic clash in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

A-minute silence was therefore observed for the dead victims of the clash.

Lawmaker representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, in his reaction commented that “Since 1914 up to date, we have had series of Ethnic clashes, the clashes threaten our unity and we need to tell ourselves the truth,” saying that “It’s unfortunate that Nigerians are unsafe in and outside the country.”

Senator James Manager representing Delta South, tasked lawmakers to refer the matter to the appropriate committee, adding that “Nigerians should prevent attacks within, so we don’t send a wrong signal.”
