No fewer than 2,000 indigenes of Oferekpe Enyigba of Izzi clan in Izzi Local Council of Ebonyi State have been displaced following an attack by people of Enyibichiri in Ikwo Local Council over a protracted land dispute. Property worth millions of naira were destroyed during the attack.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jude Madu, who confirmed the incident, stated that both police and army personnel had been mobilised to the affected community to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
He described the level of destruction in the area as unfortunate, adding that the command would not leave any stone unturned until peace returns to the affected communities.
The displaced persons are said to be camped at different locations in the affected community while awaiting both state and local government assistance.
Chairman of Abakaliki Local Council, Mr. Peter Nwogba, in a chat with newsmen, stated that police and army personnel had already been stationed in the trouble area to maintain peace and order in the area.
“The committee to look into the land dispute was set by the last administration. The committee had last Monday visited Ikwo Local Council and preparing for Izzi when the crisis erupted. Houses and property worth millions of naira were destroyed; and 2,000 persons have been displaced,” he said.(The Guardian)
