Cross River State Governor, Prof Ben Ayade
About six persons have been killed in cult war rocking Calabar metropolis of Cross River State. Scores also sustained injuries.
This is coming barley five months after about six persons, belonging to various gangs, lost their lives during a battle for superiority.
The supremacy war between two rival cults of Vikings and Klans were said to have started last Thursday, when one of the gangs stormed a popular Calabar hangout spot along Atekong/Marian Road about 7pm and opened fire.
A witness, Obong Ette, said the rival gang being attacked replied, leading to a gun duel that lasted for several hours. Two persons were reportedly killed and many others sustained gunshot wounds.
Ette said the same night, at about 8.30pm, Dr Emmanuel Igbeng, a lecturer in the Department of Accounting, was also killed at his residence at Asuquo Abasi Street, off Uwnase Street, in Calabar South.
Reacting to the development, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo, said police riot squads have been dispatched round the city to ensure that normalcy returned.
Ugbo said: “I cannot tell you the number of deaths, but the police are doing their best to stop the cult war. No arrest has been made so far.”(Judex Okoro/Daily Sun)
