CBN storms Abuja markets with cash-less campaign, set to launch mobile phone money transfer

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday took its cash-less sensitisation campaign to Wuse ultra-modern Market, Abuja, and unfolded plans to introduce the Rapid Metro Mobile Money (RMMM) to ensure that every Nigerian has access to money through his or her mobile phone.

The Abuja market campaign was given a big boost with the presence of Charly Boy and his crew of tricycle riders displaying to the admiration of the traders. In addition, Charly Boy’s dancers and comedians dished out various rib-cracking jokes and enchanting dancing steps that elicited applause from the huge crowd.

Speaking at the occasion, the CBN Deputy Governor, Operations, Mr. Tunde Lemo, told the crowd that the various alternative modes of payment remain the smart way to go in modern business transactions instead of cash payment. He allayed the fears of the traders and other Nigerians over the safety of the electronic cards by further fortifying the security features of the debit cards.

Lemo cited the popularity of the use of alternative payment channels in places like Kenya and Uganda, expressing hope that Nigeria would do better that those countries in the near future.

Also speaking, Charly Boy encouraged the traders to key into the CBN’s cash-less policy as it would help to transform the Nigerian economy and develop the country.

Responding, the Wuse Market Shop Operators and Traders’ Cooperative Society, admitted that the benefits of the cash-less policy were such that they could not be over emphasised. They noted that it will help to alleviate the problems and challenges associated with carrying huge sums of cash from one point to another.
