The chairman of the commission Mahmoud Yakubu made this known before senate committee on INCE during the 2017 budget defence at National Assembly Complex, Abuja,
The INEC Chairman said forty five billion naira has been budgeted for the commission, which is broken down into four sub-heads, such as the payment of salaries which is expected to cost twenty one billion for over sixteen thousand staff nationwide.
Giving a further breakdown, he said most of the figures in the 2017 budget is the same with 2016, such as the 2.5 billion naira that will be spent on maintenance of equipment and the 2.3 billion for capital projects.
In his remarks, Chairman of the committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Senator Ali Ndume, says that it was important to address any lapses that might be observed, to strengthen the election management body for optimal performance.
Ndume who presided over the budget defence of INEC says the committee is willing to give the commission all the support it needs to ensure that the 2019 general elections and others meet the expectations of Nigerians.
The committee also noted that the performance of the commission in the conduct of the elections would depend largely on the funds that it would be given.
Further deliberation on the budget defence will continue on Tuesday when the committee is expected to have gone through the details of the figures presented to them by INEC.
