The police in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, has sealed up the NICON Luxury Hotel, where the Anti-Corruption Network led by former federal lawmaker, Otunba Dino Melaye, scheduled to hold its maiden International Colloquium on Freedom of Information Act, 2011 toda and tomorrow (November 12 and 13).
A text message just received by News Express from one of the organisers said: “Police seal up NICON Luxury Hotel, bars Melaye from organising colloquium. Pls come now.”
The event which has as theme “Demystifying the Complexities: Empowering the People” was scheduled to hold from 10:00 a.m. on both days.
Melaye, Executive Secretary of the Anti-Corruption Network, had said late last week in a statement in Abuja: “Speakers are coming from London, United States of America and South Africa. The programme is going to be certificated and it is free. We want to raise public enlightenment on the Act. We want to use the FoI Act to fight corruption.”
