Senate frowns at neglect of due process in troops deployment to Gambia

The Nigerian Senate has frowned at the recent deployment of the country’s troops to The Gambia without following due process. The troops were deployed by President Muhammadu Buhari as part of efforts to force out defeated former president Yahya Jammeh, who remains in office despite his tenure expiring yesterday.

Senate President Bukola Saraki frowned at Buhari’s action in a Point of Order he raised during the plenary session on Thursday. He cited constitutional guides and provisions on troops deployment.

Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu North) noted that a Joint Session of the National Assembly would have been briefed before Nigeria deployed troops to any nation.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, added that the approval of the National Assembly was needed before the deployment of troops to any nation.
