Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies defeated Nigeria’s Edo Queens 1-0 after extra time to win 3-2 on aggregate and secure qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The decisive WAFU-B playoff was settled at the Canal Old Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, with Ampem Darkoa scoring early in the additional 30 minutes to end Edo Queens’ hopes of reaching the continental tournament.
According to a report by Modern Ghana, the Ghanaian champions took advantage of a corner kick to score the winning goal two minutes into the first half of extra time.
The goal proved decisive after the sides had finished regular time level, leaving the tie to be settled in extra time following their earlier 2-2 scoreline.
Edo Queens pushed for an equaliser but could not break through Ampem Darkoa’s defence as the Ghanaian side held on to secure the victory.
The result means Ampem Darkoa will represent the WAFU-B zone at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled to begin on November 1 in Egypt.
They are set to compete in Group B alongside Morocco’s AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies and Mali’s USFAS Bamako.
For Edo Queens, the defeat ends their bid to return to the continental competition, while Ampem Darkoa will now turn their attention to the group stage as they prepare to face some of Africa’s leading women’s club sides.
The qualification marks an important achievement for the Ghanaian champions, who secured their place in the tournament through the regional playoff. (PUNCH)
