Ongoing road furniture on Opebi-Mende Link Bridge
By ADERONKE OJEDIRAN
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge project, saying it will be completed by December.
Sanwo-Olu made the assessment on Sunday during an inspection of the project.
The governor said he was at the site to ascertain the reasons for delay in completing the project.
He said the project was expected to be completed by September, adding that the inspection was necessary to establish the challenges responsible for the delay and ensure timely delivery of the project.
“I was told that the project would be completed by the end of September but I am certain that by December it will be opene’ for Lagos residents.
Sanwo-Olu described the project as an ambitious engineering undertaking designed to create an architectural masterpiece while preserving the historical and cultural identity of the area.
He said the design was inspired by the area’s association with fish market, adding that the structure incorporated elements intended to reflect the heritage and history of the community.
“We wanted to create something that would not only be an architectural masterpiece but also reflect the history of this place so that we do not lose our culture and heritage or forget how we got to where we are today,” he said.
The governor explained that the project involved complex engineering work, including the use of more than 300 tonnes of steel and structures of about 25 metres high.
Sanwo-Olu said that the project comprised four major components, with work on the first component completed and installation activities ongoing.
“Engineering is about innovation, creating something that has not been done before.
“This is an example of extreme engineering, and it requires careful fabrication, design, welding and safety procedures.
“We cannot take shortcuts on a project of this magnitude. That is why I have come here personally to assess the work and ensure that it is being done properly,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said the structure would feature LED lighting, with colours representing Lagos, to enhance its appearance and establish it as an Iconic landmark in the state.
He said the state government was determined to ensure that the project would meet the required standards and deliver lasting value to Lagos residents.
The governor commended the contractors, engineers, welders and other workers handling the project for commitment, describing it as encouraging.
Sanwo-Olu said that after completion of the major construction work, additional activities, including cleaning, repainting and landscaping, would be undertaken before the site would be opened to the public.
He said that the area would eventually become a centre for recreation and cultural activities, providing Lagos residents with a space to appreciate the state’s history and development.
Sanwo-Olu gave assurance of the government’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that would endure. (NAN)
