The Nigerian Postal Service
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising postal operations and expanding its services to meet the changing needs of individuals, businesses and communities in Enugu State.
The State Postal Manager, Enugu, Mrs. Benedicta Usoroh, said this during activities marking the 2026 World Post Day, as agency staff marched from their headquarters on Ogui Road through parts of the Enugu metropolis, distributing leaflets to sensitise residents about its operations and expanding range of services.
The celebration, observed annually on October 9, had as its theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” highlighting the enduring relevance of postal services in connecting people, businesses and communities in an increasingly digital world.
Usoroh said the celebration gave the public an opportunity to learn about NIPOST’s transformation and dispel the misconception that technological advancement had rendered traditional postal services obsolete.
“Technology has not come to replace NIPOST; it has only come to enhance it,” she said, noting that the agency had diversified beyond conventional letter delivery into digital addressing, e-commerce, logistics, financial services and courier regulation.
She explained that the theme reflected the opportunities available through an interconnected postal network, adding that NIPOST remained strategically positioned to support businesses, improve access to services and facilitate the movement of goods across the country.
According to her, the Universal Postal Union, established in 1874, provides the international framework for postal cooperation among its 192 member countries, which join in commemorating World Post Day.
Highlighting the benefits of NIPOST’s operations to Enugu residents, Usoroh said traders at Ogbete, Holy Ghost and Kenyatta markets could leverage its e-commerce and logistics services to move goods to customers within the state and across Nigeria.
She also said the agency’s post offices in locations including Nsukka, Oji River, Enugu-Ezike, Awgu, Udi and Agbani helped bring postal services closer to residents, particularly those in rural communities.
According to her, some post offices also provide access to financial and agency banking services, helping residents reduce the need to travel long distances to access certain transactions.
The postal manager identified the digital postcode and address verification services as important components of NIPOST’s modernisation drive, explaining that the services were designed to improve address identification, facilitate deliveries and reduce logistical difficulties for businesses and individuals.
She urged residents to take advantage of the digital postcode system, which assigns postcode information to buildings to make locations easier to identify.
Usoroh also highlighted the agency’s e-u and logistics operations, saying NIPOST had expanded its capacity to transport parcels, household belongings, cargo and other consignments through its nationwide network and available haulage vehicles.
She said its Express Mail Service (EMS) provided domestic and international delivery options, including door-to-door services, while bulk mailing enabled organisations to distribute large volumes of correspondence at subsidised rates.
The postal manager further encouraged small and medium-sized enterprises to explore NIPOST’s services to improve their operations, reach wider markets and address delivery challenges associated with online businesses.
On the regulation of courier and logistics operators, Usoroh said NIPOST was working to sanitise the sector by ensuring that businesses providing courier and delivery services obtained the necessary licences.
She explained that regulatory oversight would help identify unlicensed operators, promote accountability and strengthen confidence among customers who rely on delivery companies for online purchases and other transactions.
Usoroh advised courier and logistics entrepreneurs, particularly those operating small businesses, to register with the agency’s Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department, stressing that proper licensing would establish their legitimacy and demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements.
She added that NIPOST had also diversified into electronic waste collection, an initiative involving the collection of discarded electronic devices, including damaged mobile phones and laptops.
According to her, these developments demonstrate the agency’s efforts to adapt to emerging economic and environmental needs while maintaining its traditional postal responsibilities.
She attributed the ongoing transformation to the leadership of the Postmaster-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Engr. Tola Odeyemi, whose vision, she said, was driving digital transformation, service improvement and the agency’s repositioning within Nigeria’s digital economy.
Usoroh also commended Governor Peter Mbah for creating what she described as an enabling environment for businesses and economic activities to thrive in Enugu State.
She appreciated NIPOST’s customers, courier and logistics partners, stakeholders and staff for their contributions to the agency’s operations and service delivery.
Explaining the significance of the procession through parts of Enugu metropolis, the postal manager said the exercise was intended to demonstrate the agency’s continued presence and commitment to serving residents.
She urged the people of Enugu State to patronise NIPOST, stressing that the agency remained open to individuals and businesses seeking postal, logistics, e-commerce and other available services.
“NIPOST is still very much in existence. We have diversified into so many areas, and we are doing our best to meet the changing needs of the public,” she said.
She acknowledged that the agency faced challenges but maintained that innovation and diversification remained central to its efforts to overcome them and deliver improved services.
The World Post Day celebration formed part of NIPOST Enugu’s efforts to raise public awareness of its expanding operations and encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the modern postal network. (The Nation)
