The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia renewed its security alert Monday for the third consecutive day following a series of Houthi attacks targeting airports in the Kingdom.
The US mission issued security alerts on Oct. 10, 11 and 12, with the latest warning citing additional attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and a targeted attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam in the country’s east on Sunday.
The mission said US government employees working in Saudi Arabia require special authorization to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as airports in Jeddah and Dammam.
It urged US citizens to exercise “extreme caution” when using major airports across Saudi Arabia and warned of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.
The embassy advised travelers to check their flight status directly with airlines and airports and said private cars, trains and buses could provide alternatives to air travel.
US government employees are also prohibited from traveling within 20 miles (32 kilometers) of the Yemen border due to security risks and require special authorization to travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir and Najran, as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu and Taif.
The mission advised US citizens to remain alert, monitor local media and follow instructions from Saudi authorities in the event of an aerial attack.
The warning comes after a series of Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh in recent days.
The weekend attacks on the Riyadh airport killed 14 people and injured 320 others in total, according to Saudi authorities and diplomatic sources.
The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government has blamed the Houthis for attacks on Saudi civilian airports and vowed a firm response. (AA)
