Ebonyi PDP governorship candidate, Dr Odii
By CHARLES IWUOHA
The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has urged residents of the state, both indigenes and non-indigenes, to prepare for decisive political battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
He expressed confidence that victory will ultimately be secured through the collective determination of the people.
Odii, who spoke during an encounter with thousands of enthusiastic residents at a fuel station on Sunday in Abakaliki, said the forthcoming election represents a defining moment in the political history of Ebonyi State.
Stressing that the struggle is not about personal ambition but about rescuing the state from what he described as years of missed opportunities and the mismanagement of public resources.
He maintained that the Anyi G’ Emeya movement” is a people-driven mission to restore accountable leadership, economic opportunities and inclusive governance in Ebonyi State.
According to him, the deployment of technology and the engagement of competent technology experts to monitor electoral activities across polling units will make electoral manipulation increasingly difficult, while urging residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and remain vigilant throughout the electoral process.
The PDP candidate explained that, by the special grace of God, his business accomplishments had already provided him with the opportunity to enjoy a life of extraordinary comfort and luxury anywhere in the world.
He disclosed that he could have chosen to enjoy the privileges of wealth, including travelling in luxury yachts and private aircraft, rather than offering himself for the demanding responsibility of political leadership.
However, he said his decision to participate in the forthcoming election was driven by a desire to create a society where children from poor backgrounds could aspire to become governors, ministers, legislators and occupy other important positions based on their intellectual capacity, leadership abilities and personal accomplishments rather than political connections or family relationships.
Odii declared that Ebonyi must move away from a political culture where access to opportunities and public offices is perceived to depend on having relatives, in-laws or powerful political godfathers occupying influential positions.
Recounting the circumstances that inspired his philanthropic interventions across the state, Odii disclosed that the construction of more than 150 houses for indigent Ebonyians was never part of his original personal plans.
He explained that foreign construction experts had initially been engaged to develop his proposed private residence, which was designed to include an 18-hole golf course, helicopter landing facilities, swimming pools, a zoo, conference halls, a private runway and a gymnasium.
However, during an inspection of the proposed site with the foreign construction company, he encountered neighbouring communities where families were still living in thatched houses and deplorable conditions.
According to him, that experience provoked a personal reflection on the morality of investing enormous resources in private luxury while people living around him struggled to afford decent accommodation.
He consequently decided to redirect the resources towards providing decent homes for indigent families across Ebonyi State.
Odii disclosed that he has yet to construct his originally planned personal residence, maintaining that his greater satisfaction comes from seeing disadvantaged families enjoy decent living conditions.
He further explained that the modest duplex where he currently resides in his village belongs to his mother, adding that he constructed it for her because she felt uncomfortable seeing him build houses for people outside the family while she continued living without comparable comfort.
The encounter reportedly attracted thousands of residents after commercial motorcyclists and other road users recognised Odii when he stopped to refuel his vehicle on his way to a housewarming ceremony at Onicha Igboeze.
In a spontaneous demonstration of generosity, Odii directed the fuel station attendants to dispense fuel to customers at his expense, attracting an enthusiastic crowd that gathered around him.
Addressing the excited residents, he urged them not to sell their political future for temporary financial inducements, which he described as peanuts compared with the enormous opportunities that good governance could bring to the state.
He specifically charged them to obtain their PVCs, participate actively in the forthcoming election and remain resolute in defending their votes against any form of manipulation.
He also urged them to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presidential level while voting for him in the Ebonyi governorship election.
Odii warned that nobody, irrespective of political status or influence, should be allowed to undermine the people’s democratic choice.
In another significant declaration, Odii reiterated his commitment to serving only one term in office if elected governor of Ebonyi State, drawing inspiration from the example of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
He said his ambition was not driven by the desire to perpetuate himself in power or accumulate personal political advantages but by the determination to establish a governance structure that would restore confidence in public institutions and create sustainable opportunities for the people.
He maintained that four years would provide sufficient opportunity to demonstrate what purposeful leadership, prudent resource management and people-oriented governance could achieve when public resources are deployed for the common good.
The massive crowd reportedly responded with songs of solidarity, expressing optimism about the political movement and questioning why the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared, in their assessment, to be placing greater emphasis on zoning arguments than on presenting a comprehensive account of the administration’s achievements.
For the residents, the encounter represented more than a roadside political interaction; it was an opportunity to engage directly with a candidate whose supporters believe his private-sector experience and philanthropic interventions offer an alternative model of leadership.
Odii, however, reminded them that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate, urging them to translate their enthusiasm into responsible electoral participation.
As the 2027 governorship election approaches, the Anyi G’ Emeya movement insists that the contest should be determined by competence, accountability, opportunity and the collective aspirations of Ebonyi people rather than political intimidation, inducement or the manipulation of zoning sentiments.
