By DEBORAH AKPEDE
The police in Lagos State have arrested a man, declared wanted for cyberbullying and making disparaging remarks against clerics.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the police said that the suspect, who resides in the Alakuko area of Lagos, was tracked down and arrested on Tuesday following petitions against him by some clerics.
Following the petitions, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
A police source told NAN on Wednesday that the arrest followed a petition by a well-known Celestial Church pastor, in Ojokoro area, who accused the suspect of making disparaging remarks against him and his religious beliefs.
He said another petition was also submitted against the suspect by a popular Islamic scholar in Ogba area.
The source said that the Islamic scholar similarly accused the suspect of allegedly making odious remarks against his person and his religious beliefs.
According to the source, the suspect was also on the wanted list of the police in Kwara, where a warrant of arrest had been issued against him.
“The warrant is connected to cases of cyberbullying involving several other religious clerics,” he said.
The source the suspect had subsequently been profiled while the command awaited more victims who might come forward with complaints relating to his alleged cyber assaults.
The source said additional complaints would assist the police in completing the investigation and determining the next steps in the case.
According to him, the suspect will be taken to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.
He assured that the investigation would be conducted professionally, with all relevant parties given the opportunity to present their evidence. (NAN)
