The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command says its operatives have prevented jungle justice against a man accused of attempting to abduct a child in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Command received a distress call on October 4, 2026, at about 2:46 p.m., that an unidentified adult male was being assaulted by an angry mob over an alleged attempt to abduct a child.
“Following the report, operatives from Kuje Division were immediately dispatched to the scene, where one Bashir Usman was rescued from an irate mob that was about to lynch him.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was being assaulted over allegations that he attempted to abduct a five-year-old girl in front of her residence in Angwan Lado, Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
“The suspect has been taken into protective custody, while investigations have been expanded to unravel the extent of his activities and apprehend any accomplices,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Police Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, strongly discouraged members of the public from taking the law into their own hands or engaging in jungle justice, noting that such acts are criminal and tantamount to murder under the law.
The Command enjoined parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to the safety and well-being of their children and wards.
It urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08028940883, 08032003913. (Nigerian Tribune)
