The accident scene
By JOY AKINSANYA
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun has confirmed the death of nine persons in a road crash along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore Express Road.
The Sector’s Spokesman, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abeokuta.
Odunsi said the incident occurred at about 4:55 p.m. at Bethel area along the Ijebu-Ode/Ore Express Road.
He said the incident involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, with registration number 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line and a white Sino Truck with registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
According to him, nine people—three males and six females—were involved in the crash, and all were killed.
He said the crash occurred in the rain on a slippery road, adding that a preliminary investigation identified speeding as the probable cause.
“The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene at about 4:58 p.m., two minutes after receiving the report.
“The deceased victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police MTD,” he said.
Odunsi quoted the Sector Commander, Mr Oludare Ogunjobi, as urging motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise caution while driving during rainfall.
Ogunjobi advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid behaviours that could endanger other road users.
He noted that speeding on wet roads was particularly dangerous because reduced tyre grip and poor visibility could make it difficult for motorists to control their vehicles or stop safely.
The sector commander commiserated with the families of the victims and urged all road users to make safety their priority at all times. (NAN)
