Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State
By IFEOMA AKA
Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter, has embarked on a seven-day warning strike from Friday, Oct. 2, following government’s failure to address outstanding welfare and remuneration.
The association disclosed this on Friday in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Mrs K.P. Onyia, and Secretary, Mr. M.O. Onyeze, in Enugu.
It said the strike followed prolonged efforts to get the government to address what it described as the plight of law officers in the state.
The association is demanding full harmonisation of members remuneration including that of Magistrates.
It also demanded payment of members’ Bar Practising Fees and annual Bar Conference fees.
Others include the payment and restoration of several allowances and professional fees, the full restoration and payment, including arrears of law officers’ transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances.
According to the statement, the warning strike, which began from 12 midnight on Friday, October 2, would last for seven judicial days.
“During the strike, no law officer in Abuja or Lagos Liaison Offices, Government House or any Ministry, Department and Agency should be on duty, attend court, or visit correctional centres, police stations or other law enforcement agencies in furtherance of official duties.
“The law officers should refrain from carrying out government business in line with the association’s collective resolution,” it added.
The association expressed hope that the seven-day warning strike would provide the authorities with an opportunity to address the outstanding demands and avert further industrial action. (NAN)
