The Imo State Government says the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, September 26, were stalled due to ongoing court proceedings challenging the conduct of the polls.

Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday explaining the circumstances surrounding the postponement of the election.

Emelumba said some opposition political parties had approached the court, seeking an order to stop the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission from conducting the elections.

According to him, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the National Democratic Congress, NDC, specifically instituted suits seeking to halt the polls on several grounds.

He said the substantive suits had been adjourned until October 30 for hearing, adding that the state government could not proceed with the election while the legal challenges were pending.

The Commissioner said, “No law-abiding government will proceed with such an election when two political parties are in court against its conduct.”

Emelumba said the state government was awaiting the resolution of the court processes and would fix a new date for the local government elections once the legal issues were settled. (Channels)
