A group, Iyaniwura Youth and Students Vanguard, has rejected reports that the Supreme Court judgment of September 24 disqualified Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello from contesting the 2027 Ogun Central senatorial election.

In a press statement on Friday, the group, a youth and students mobilisation platform for Ogun Central, said no such disqualification order was contained in the judgment as publicly reported.

“The Supreme Court judgment concerned the validity of specified provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 in a dispute involving INEC and the Zenith Labour Party. Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo Bello was not a party to that suit, and the judgment did not pronounce a specific order removing her from the 2027 Ogun Central senatorial contest,” the statement reads in part.

The group, in the statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akeem Mosaku, and Secretary, Olasunkanmi Ijadunoye, said attempts to present a general judicial pronouncement on electoral law as a personal disqualification of Obasanjo Bello was misleading.

“A political interpretation of a judgment is not the judgment itself. A social-media narrative is not a court order. Political propaganda is not a judicial pronouncement,” the group said.

It challenged those circulating the claim to identify the specific provision of the judgment that expressly disqualifies her, warning against presenting speculation and partisan commentary as a decision of the apex court.

The group said, “We consequently call on all individuals, political actors and organisations circulating such claims to stop presenting speculation, interpretation or partisan commentary as an established decision of the Supreme Court.

“We are particularly concerned about what appears to be an emerging political attempt to create confusion around the candidacy of Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo Bello ahead of the 2027 election.

“The appropriate place for genuine legal questions is the court and the appropriate basis for public discussion is verifiable evidence—not sensational headlines, political propaganda or deliberate misrepresentation of judicial decisions.’

Iyaniwura Youth and Students Vanguard also addressed political actors in the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are questioning Obasanjo Bello’s candidacy, urging them to channel any genuine legal objection through the appropriate judicial process.

“If there is a genuine legal objection to her candidacy, let the appropriate legal process determine it. Produce the law, produce the relevant records, approach the competent court and allow the judiciary to speak for itself,” it said.

The group said it was declaring its “total, unwavering and unequivocal support” for Obasanjo Bello’s aspiration to represent Ogun Central in 2027, citing her track record, experience and interest in youth and student welfare.

It urged residents of Ogun Central, particularly students and young people, to remain calm and demand verifiable evidence rather than rely on social media narratives. (The Sun)
