There are anniversaries that merely count the passage of time, and there are anniversaries that invite a people to pause, look backward with gratitude, look inward with wisdom and look forward with renewed courage. The 39th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State belongs to the latter.

On 23 September 1987, a new political geography was born from the old Cross River State. But the creation of Akwa Ibom was more than the drawing of administrative boundaries. It was the institutional expression of a long-held aspiration for identity, self-determination and development. Thirty-nine years later, the significance of that historic moment continues to unfold.

Therefore, our first response must be gratitude.

Gratitude to God, whose providence has accompanied the State through seasons of uncertainty, adversity and opportunity. Gratitude to the generations that dreamed of a State they could call their own. Gratitude to the leaders—past and present—whose contributions, whether celebrated or understated, have added successive layers to the Akwa Ibom story. And gratitude to the ordinary citizens whose labour, sacrifice, enterprise and resilience have transformed aspiration into reality.

A State is not merely its roads, buildings, airports, industries or institutions. A State is ultimately its people. Infrastructure may provide the physical architecture of development, but human beings provide its soul. The true measure of Akwa Ibom at 39, therefore, lies not only in what has been constructed, but in the quality of life, dignity, opportunity, knowledge and hope available to its citizens.

This is why the idea of Akwa Ibom as the “Land of Promise” possesses a philosophical depth beyond its popular expression. A promise is simultaneously an achievement and an obligation. It celebrates what has been accomplished while demanding what remains to be accomplished.

The contemporary story is increasingly one of expanding possibilities. The growth of Ibom Air, including the acquisition of Airbus A220-300 aircraft, and the development of Victor Attah International Airport reflect an ambition to connect Akwa Ibom more directly with Nigeria and the wider world. Recent investments have also included airport infrastructure, digital connectivity and aviation-related facilities.

Yet development must never become an excuse for complacency. At 39, Akwa Ibom must ask the deeper questions: How do we convert infrastructure into prosperity? How do we turn education into productive capacity? How do we transform our abundant human capital into globally competitive enterprise? How do we ensure that rural communities, young people, women and vulnerable citizens participate meaningfully in the State's economic future?

The ARISE Agenda—Agricultural Revolution, Rural Development, Infrastructure Maintenance and Advancement, Security Management, and advancement in Education and Health—provides a framework around which these questions have been articulated. Its enduring value will ultimately be measured by implementation, inclusion and the tangible improvement of citizens' lives.

But perhaps the greatest inheritance of Akwa Ibom is neither oil nor infrastructure. It is the capacity to imagine a better tomorrow.

At 39, therefore, let us celebrate without forgetting. Let us praise without becoming complacent. Let us remember the sacrifices of those who came before us while accepting responsibility for those who will come after us.

May Akwa Ibom continue to rise—not merely in buildings and statistics, but in character, knowledge, prosperity, justice, unity and human dignity.
