Traffic congestion has intensified along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following the fall of a trailer conveying a container on the Kara Bridge, forcing a total closure of the bridge outward Lagos.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, has brought traffic to a standstill on the Lagos-bound section of the bridge, with the resulting gridlock extending beyond the Berger area.

The situation has also affected motorists heading inward Lagos, as commuters have been forced to share one side of the expressway at Kara Bridge.

The development has compounded the traffic situation already caused by ongoing repair work on the bridge, where the Federal Government is replacing deteriorating expansion joints.Traffic was brought to a standstill on the Lagos-bound section of the bridge.

Efforts are currently underway to create an alternative passage for motorists. Barriers are being removed from a section of the bridge that had initially been closed to traffic to facilitate the repairs.

The section is expected to be opened to vehicles to ease the congestion and restore movement along the busy corridor.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and their counterparts from Ogun State are on the ground managing traffic and assisting with efforts to improve vehicular movement.

The development has compounded the traffic situation already caused by ongoing repair work on the bridge.

The two-week rehabilitation of the Kara Bridge commenced on September 8, 2026, following an earlier postponement to allow for further traffic management planning.

The project, directed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, involves the replacement of damaged expansion joints and is expected to run until September 22, 2026.

The repair work has already caused significant traffic congestion along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with motorists previously experiencing delays stretching from Kara Bridge to parts of Lagos, including the Berger area. (Chanels)
