We review the action, including Man Utd captain’s hat-trick in win over Ipswich and Blues edging a thriller

A Bruno Fernandes masterclass against Ipswich Town earned Michael Carrick the first victory of his first full season in charge at Manchester United.

The attacking midfielder scored three goals in 28 minutes, amassing a third of his Premier League tally from last season in a single game. It was his third Manchester United hat-trick in all competitions – matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s total for the club.

“Scoring goals is the best feeling in football, scoring a hat-trick at home with our fans is something amazing that I’m very proud of,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “But the main thing is I need to score goals to help the team win games. Today I did that and I hope I can do it much more and help my team-mates score goals, too.”

Man Utd fell behind to a thunderous Leif Davis strike, but Fernandes – recently voted by his peers as the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year – levelled five minutes before the break.

Man Utd had some fortune with the goal that put them ahead. An attempted clearance hit Harry Maguire’s hands before the United defender saw his shot deflect in for a Jacob Greaves own goal that was awarded amid Ipswich protests.

Then captain Fernandes scored twice more, including a penalty conceded by Greaves only 165 seconds after his own goal. Both of the Portugal international’s Premier League hat-tricks have come in Man Utd’s first home games of a season.

Last season’s assist king – who set a Premier League single-season record with 21 – added another with a long through-ball that Bryan Mbeumo lofted over the goalkeeper, before Chuba Akpom pulled a goal back for Ipswich in stoppage time.

Kobbie Mainoo returned to the starting line-up and delivered a tempo-controlling performance, leaving the field in the 80th minute with a 90 per cent pass completion rate – the highest of any Man Utd midfielder.

“He was world class,” team-mate Luke Shaw told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The way he controlled the game and the way he drove us forward, I know Bruno scored the hat-trick, but I would put Mainoo down for man of the match.”

Marcus Rashford, who spent time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona over the last two seasons, made his first Premier League start in 627 days and had more touches in Ipswich’s penalty area than any team-mate.

Man Utd finished with 33 attempts on Ipswich’s goal – eight from Fernandes – their most in a Premier League game in almost a decade.

Chelsea’s new front three were electric again as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion to make it three wins from three in Xabi Alonso’s first week of competitive action.

After Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and new signing Morgan Rogers all scored in the opening-weekend win against Fulham, the trio were too hot for Brighton to handle at Stamford Bridge.

Joao Pedro scored and set up Palmer for the winner. Rogers provided the assist for Pedro Neto. Romeo Lavia scored within four minutes – the midfielder’s first goal for Chelsea, exactly four years after he scored his only other Premier League goal for Southampton against the Blues.

Chelsea were three goals ahead after 32 minutes, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had an eventful debut, thrown into the starting line-up after only one training session with his new team-mates following his transfer from Aston Villa.

The World Cup winner, the first player aged over 30 to start for Chelsea since Thiago Silva in May 2024, made four saves to keep the home side ahead, but conceded three times.

“I spoke with Chelsea legends John Terry and Petr Cech,” Martinez told Sky Sports. “I know how big this club is and what we want to achieve this season. I came here to help.

“I had an amazing seven years at Aston Villa. I have come here to challenge and to try and win the Premier League.”

Malick Yalcouye volleyed in the rebound from Martinez’s first save – the midfielder’s first goal in his first Premier League start. Joao Pedro then scored an own goal – becoming the first Chelsea player to score, assist and score an own goal – before Pascal Gross headed past Martinez deep in stoppage time.

Moises Caicedo, returning from injury, left the field again only 14 minutes after coming on. Alonso said the midfielder will be assessed. “We hope it is not new and not more than last time,” he said.

Chelsea will nonetheless carry a perfect record under Alonso into a trip to defending champions Arsenal next weekend, scoring seven Premier League goals but conceding five.

“I am here for a reason,” Martinez said. “The front three is amazing. When we go forward, we can hurt teams. We had a lot of chances to finish the game. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro had chances to kill the game. At the back, we need to bring the goals down."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin became the only player to score in each of the last 11 Premier League seasons as Leeds United came from behind to draw against Brentford.

Brentford continued their fine start to the season – beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on the opening weekend – by taking the lead through Kevin Schade’s wonderful flick with the outside of his boot into the top corner, and they dominated their opponents.

But though Brentford had 22 shots – their joint-most in a Premier League away game – Calvert-Lewin scored from close range with 11 minutes remaining.

It was the first time a Leeds striker has scored in four successive Premier League games at Elland Road since Mark Viduka, 22 years ago.

“It was definitely a good point,” Leeds manager Daniel Farke said. “Brentford are in red-hot form; they deserved to be in the lead. They asked a lot of my boys.”

Brentford have never lost a Premier League game in which Schade has scored – winning 13 and drawing four times.

Wilson Isidor scored the winner for Sunderland against Fulham three days after signing a contract extension.

It was precisely a year to the day after he scored his only other matchwinning Premier League goal – a 90th-minute strike against Brentford last season.

In a mark of head coach Regis Le Bris’s impact with his substitutes, the Haitian forward came on in the 64th minute and put the Black Cats ahead 11 minutes later, converting fellow substitute Habib Diarra’s cross.

The defeat leaves new Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa winless in his first two Premier League games, following in the footsteps of Roy Hodgson, Slavisa Jokanovic and Scott Parker, who all experienced a similar start.

Fulham had 11 shots without hitting the target – the most by a top-flight team since the Cottagers themselves back in April.

Arbeloa told the BBC Match of the Day his side did not deserve the defeat. “It’s not easy but we are a new team with new ideas,” he said. “We will improve with time. We will have ups and downs. We need to realise we need to show more energy and fight for every ball.” (premierleague.com)
