Haaland and Rayan Cherki starred for Manchester City as they defeated Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park.

The France international scored the first brace of his league career to ensure City maintained their winning start to the Premier League campaign under Enzo Maresca.

Haaland also netted two of his own in south London, starting the scoring in the 17th minute before rounding off the victory late on, after failing to find the back of the net in Man City’s opening fixture against AFC Bournemouth last weekend.

Palace's first league goal of the season came via an own goal from Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could not get out of the way when Yeremy Pino's free-kick cannoned back off the woodwork and in off the goalkeeper, though it was not enough to spark a comeback as Cherki and Haaland settled matters.

How the match unfolded

City went close to an opener in the seventh minute, with Dean Henderson going full stretch to keep out Elliot Anderson's curler before Haaland saw a poked effort on the rebound cleared off the line by Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Haaland did open the scoring 10 minutes later, towering over Chris Richards to meet Antoine Semenyo’s cross and send a looping header over Henderson.

Phil Foden missed two golden opportunities as City looked to capitalise on their dominance, first curling over after a good pass from Anderson and then completely mistiming a header from Cherki's centre.

Tyrick Mitchell and Eddie Nketiah failed to test Donnarumma either side of half-time as Palace threatened to equalise, and they were made to rue their wastefulness as Cherki brilliantly evaded two defenders before squeezing his shot into the bottom-left corner in the 54th minute.

Palace were back in contention two minutes later when Pino's free-kick crashed off the crossbar and in off Donnarumma’s back.

However, within three minutes, Cherki restored City’s two-goal lead. He found space on the edge of the area and unleashed a strike that took a deflection on its way in past Henderson.

Maresca handed Premier League debuts to both Ayyoub Bouaddi and Ryan McAidoo as City went into cruise control. Haaland added further gloss, firing in at the near post following a perfectly weighted pass from Foden in the 84th minute.

City sit top of the table with maximum points from their two games, while Palace drop to 20th, as new boss Pierre Sage awaits a first Premier League point. (Premier League)
