Akwa Ibom Government is set to investigate the cause of last Monday’s flooding in some parts of Uyo, the state capital, with a view to forestalling a re-occurrence, Govenor Godswill Akpabio has announced.
Reacting to the flooding which rendered Ukana Offot, Atiku Abubakar, IBB streets and Ekom Iman junction, among others, impassable after heavy rains, Governor Akpabio said during the Government House monthly prayer meeting held at St. John’s Chaplaincy, Uyo: “I want to investigate and know the root cause of the flood because we have invested much constructing underground drainage system in the state.”
He expressed shock at the flooding despite the huge resources put in to combat the menace, and announced the constitution of a committee headed by Engr. Etido Inyang, Special Adviser on Technical Matters, to investigate the cause.
The governor recalled that “last year even when the entire Niger Delta was flooded, Akwa Ibom State was exempted.” He described last Monday’s incident as strange.
Akpabio used the opportunity to disclose that he would join President Goodluck Jonathan for the Christian pilgrimage Wednesday this week. He said that this would afford him and other Christian governors an opportunity to pray for the progress of the nation, ascribing the transformation in the state to a robust partnership with God.
“When you are in partnership with God, what you have is transformation. We are partnership with an uncommon God and what we have is Uncommon Transformation,” the governor stated.
Earlier in his homily, Hon. Justice Godwin Abraham, who preached on the topic “Sacrifice of Unity”, had said: “It takes sacrifice to be united. Jesus Christ sacrificed his life to unite the world with God. Man is naturally disunited in nature and disunity is a consequence of evil.”
The prayer meeting attended by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Unoma Ekaette, featured song rendition by the Hilltop Choir, prayer for the nation, state, the President, governor and other leaders.
