PDP takes early lead in Rivers rerun election, wins first constituency

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken an early lead in Saturday’s parliamentary rerun elections in Rivers State, winning the first constituency for which the result has been announced.

“The returning officer of Okrika Ogu/ Bolo federal constituency in Rivers State has declared Gogo Tamuno of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner in election held on Saturday,” a report this morning by Sunday Sun said.

“The declaration which was made at exactly 2:20am saw the returning officer who was identified as Okwulehie Ikechukwu, announcing that Tamuno polled a total of 11,668 votes to defeat Maureen Tamuno of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 5,995 votes,” the report said.

News Express reports that the election, a straight fight between the federal-ruling APC and PDP which controls the state, was marred by violence and the snatching of ballot boxes. At least two deaths were recorded.

The re-run legislative election in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area scheduled to hold in five units of Ward 12 was moved to today. Mr Austin Okojie, a Supervising Resident Electoral Commissioner, announced the suspension.

Okojie told newsmen at Abonnema, headquarters of Akuku-Toru Local Government, on Saturday that the decision to suspend the election was taken after a meeting with representatives of parties.

He said INEC did not continue with the exercise because ad-hoc staff and corps members complained of lateness.
