The African Chapter of the International Human Rights Art Movement (IHRAM) has announced the shortlist for the African Human Rights Refugee Voices Essay Writing Challenge, a pan-African literary initiative aimed at promoting awareness of the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons through creative writing. Coordinated by Wole Adedoyin, the competition attracted entries from writers across Africa, each exploring themes of forced displacement, resilience, human rights, justice, and hope. The initiative forms part of IHRAM’s broader commitment to using literature and the arts as tools for advancing human rights advocacy across the continent.

Following a thorough evaluation by the panel of judges, fifteen entries have been shortlisted for the next stage of the competition. The shortlisted essays are: “Right on Paper, Realities on the Ground: Survival and the Search for Justice in Africa’s Refugee Crisis” by Ajayi Olayinka James; “The Fractured Promise: Why Refugee Education, Healthcare, and Social Inclusion Define Africa’s Future” by Abdulganiyy Abdulwasiu Olanrewaju; “Reimagining Protection for Africa’s Displaced Millions” by McLord Selasi Azalekor; “The Plight and Resilience of Refugees in Nigeria” by Okereke Amazon-Rose; “When the Map Has No Room for You: Displacement, Dignity and the Crisis of Forced Migration in Africa” by Osakwe Osazee David; “From Displacement to Destiny: My Journey Through Loss, Hope, and Medicine” by Victor Zechariah; “African Human Rights Refugee Voices” by Isaiah Galgallo Tuke; and “The Sea Has No Paperwork” by Getrude Gyamfua Gyamfi.

Also shortlisted are “Protracted Conflict and Internal Displacement in Northern Nigeria” by Kenneth Okpomo; “The Weight We Carry: Gender-Based Challenges in African Refugee Communities” by Jummai Bulama-Ashebu; “When Home Becomes Dangerous: The Invisible Crisis of Displaced Girls in Northern Nigeria” by Amina Ummu Hamzah; “Jukun Zenda” by Nyiyongu Samuel Shawon; “Echoes of Home: A Refugee’s Odyssey of Resilience” by Bill Nwonwu; “Voices Beyond Borders: The Resilience and Hope of Africa’s Displaced” by Fatima Mohammed Usman; and “The Dust That Remembers Your Name” by Fortune Onyema. According to IHRAM, the shortlisted works reflect the depth of research, originality, and compassion demonstrated by African writers in addressing one of the continent’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.

The African Chapter of IHRAM stated that the quality and diversity of the shortlisted essays reaffirm the important role of literature in amplifying marginalized voices and fostering public engagement with issues affecting refugees and displaced populations. The organization noted that the competition provides a platform for writers to contribute meaningfully to ongoing conversations on human rights, social justice, peacebuilding, and sustainable solutions to forced migration across Africa.

IHRAM congratulated all the shortlisted writers for their outstanding achievement and commended every participant for contributing to the success of the inaugural edition of the African Human Rights Refugee Voices Essay Writing Challenge. The organization reaffirmed its dedication to promoting human rights through artistic and literary expression and disclosed that the winners of the competition will be announced upon the conclusion of the final stage of adjudication.
