The General Manager, Research, Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Dr Deji Ojo, has assured Nigerians that grid collapses will reduce significantly between 2026 and 2030.

Ojo gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

He said NISO’s technical reforms, stronger compliance measures and collaboration with stakeholders were already improving grid stability nationwide.

NAN reports that NISO was created on April 30, 2024, by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission following the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria under the Electricity Act, 2023.

Ojo said Nigeria recorded several grid collapses in 2024 before NISO became operational.

He said only a few collapses occurred in 2025, while the 2026 incident resulted mainly from gas shortages that reduced electricity generation.

According to him, lower generation weakens grid stability, making the national grid more vulnerable to disturbances.

He said NISO was establishing operational frameworks to strengthen system management and improve electricity supply reliability.

Ojo said grid collapses could not be completely eliminated because they were influenced by generation capacity and the balance between electricity supply and demand.

He, however, assured Nigerians that NISO would continue implementing measures to minimise system disturbances and maintain a more stable national grid.

Ojo said the organisation had strengthened collaboration with key industry stakeholders to address factors contributing to grid instability.

He said NISO was also deploying systems to improve real-time grid visibility for better monitoring and operational control.

According to him, improved visibility will enable operators to detect faults early and respond more effectively, enhancing overall grid stability. (NAN)
