The Almajiri-to-Tech Foundation is set to showcase the transformation of 21 former Almajiri children into skilled technology entrepreneurs as the pioneer graduates of its Almajiri-to-Tech Initiative graduate in Abuja on July 29.

The graduates, many of whom were previously street beggars, will demonstrate their newly acquired skills by assembling computers and drones live before guests at the event.

According to the foundation, the six-month programme equipped the participants with practical skills in repairing phones, laptops, power banks, fans and other electronic devices, while also providing entrepreneurship training to enable them establish their own businesses.

Founder of the Almajiri-to-Tech Foundation and New Horizons Group Africa, Tim Akano, said the initiative goes beyond technical training by combining education with welfare and character development. He noted that the children received uniforms, meals, transportation support and mentorship from religious instructors of their choice throughout the programme.

Akano highlighted the story of one of the graduates, Mohammed, who arrived from neighbouring Niger Republic unable to speak English but is now fluent and capable of handling customer repairs independently.

He described the initiative as a model for addressing some of Africa’s most pressing social and economic challenges, including insecurity, youth unemployment, irregular migration and drug abuse.

The foundation estimates that Nigeria has about 30 million out-of-school and Almajiri children, describing the figure as a significant untapped human resource capable of driving economic development if properly harnessed.

To support the graduates after training, the organisation said it has secured a one-year workshop in Wuse 2, Abuja, where members of the public can patronise the young technicians directly. Outstanding graduates will also receive business tools and cash grants to help them establish their enterprises.

Akano called for greater investment in skills development, arguing that sustainable solutions to insecurity, poverty and migration lie in creating opportunities for young people.

“You do not end migration by building higher walls in Europe. You do not end insecurity and terrorism only through kinetic solutions. You end them by building hope in Africa and giving young people quality skills and opportunities,” he said. (Arise News)
