The Ogun Government on Thursday screened no fewer than 100 prospective head teachers for leadership positions in public primary schools across the state.
The screening, conducted by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Abeokuta, was aimed at assessing the candidates’ suitability for the positions.
Addressing the candidates, the Chairman of SUBEB, Mr Olalekan Ifede, said they were invited for the exercise based on their qualifications and readiness to assume leadership responsibilities.
He explained that the screening was designed to assess their intellectual capacity, comportment and overall suitability, stressing that it was not intended to witch-hunt anyone.
“The interview is to assess your comportment, dressing and other qualities to ensure that you represent the board well when deployed to schools.
“This is a significant stage in your career and you should see it as a responsibility that must be handled with commitment,” Ifede said.
He urged the candidates to remain confident and embrace technology as an essential tool for modern educational leadership.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Sewakanu Noah, urged the prospective headteachers to uphold high standards in their respective schools.
Noah commended the board for its reforms aimed at strengthening basic education in the state.
Earlier, the Director of Administration and Supplies at SUBEB, Mr Femi Fatade, said the screening was mandatory for all prospective headteachers, stressing that promotion would be based on merit rather than being automatic.
Responding, the Headteacher of Local Government Nursery and Primary School II, Sagamu, Mrs Adeyinka Odunaiki, appreciated the board for the monitoring exercise and assured that the identified gaps would be addressed.
NAN reports that other schools visited included St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School I and II, Ijebu-Ode; AUD School, Ikenne-Remo; and Local Government Nursery and Primary School, Sabo, Sagamu.
Others were UBE Model Primary School, Olorombo, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola Primary School, Totoro, St. James United Primary School, Mobalufon, Odogbolu; and Obafemi Owode Local Government Nursery and Primary School ,Adigbe, Abeokuta. (NAN)
