Nigerian scholar Nnabuike Chisom, also known by his Chinese name Qi Yunsong, has become a symbol of academic excellence and cultural connection after making history at a Chinese university for his impressive command of Mandarin.
Chisom recently graduated with a Master’s degree from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL) in Wuhan, China, where he distinguished himself not only for his academic performance but also for his ability to embrace and understand the Chinese language and culture.
During the university’s graduation ceremony, Chisom was chosen to represent the international student community and deliver the keynote address to an audience of almost 4,000 people. Unlike many international graduates who speak in English, he surprised the audience by delivering his entire address in flawless Mandarin, China’s official language.
From Nigeria to China
Chisom’s story is one of determination and commitment. He moved to China as an international student, entering an environment with a different language, culture, and way of life.
Despite the challenge of adapting to a new country, he dedicated himself to learning Mandarin from the start. Through consistent practice, interaction with Chinese communities, and cultural immersion, he gradually developed the ability to communicate confidently in the language.
His achievement is remarkable because Mandarin is widely considered one of the most difficult languages for foreigners to master, yet Chisom acquired enough proficiency to address a large audience in the language.
The speech that made him famous
Chisom’s graduation speech became the highlight of the ceremony because it signified more than academic success. It demonstrated the potential for cultural understanding between Nigeria and China.
As the representative of international students, he used the opportunity to share his experiences, express his appreciation for China, and reflect on his academic journey. (The Nation)
