Residents of Goshen Close, Lakowe Phase II in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State have appealed to the local council and the state government for urgent intervention over devastating flooding in the area.

The residents made the call during separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.

The residents said constant rainfall had triggered devastating flooding in the area, with buildings and other valuables submerged as the rain persisted.

They urged the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Abdullahi Olowa, and the state government to urgently intervene following severe flooding that has left the community in distress.

Mr Chuks Amadi, a community development executive, said the rainfall triggered massive flooding that swept away valuables and submerged several buildings, with floodwaters reaching nearly halfway up many houses.

“The disaster has made it difficult for residents to move freely, while many business owners have been forced to suspend their daily activities due to the persistent flooding,” he said.

Amadi described the situation as alarming, adding that the persistent flooding poses a serious threat to lives, property, and livelihoods if urgent measures are not taken.

“Let the LCDA and the state deploy emergency management agencies, and other relevant government authorities to urgently assess the damage.

“They should provide lasting solutions through improved drainage systems, flood control measures, and relief support for affected families.”

Mr David Amira, a pastor, said, “Our worship centre has been flooded for days. We can’t even gather to worship.”

Another resident, Ms Anne Etuok, said her family home had been taken over by floodwater, forcing them to take refuge in a relative’s house in a nearby community.

She added that residents needed urgent intervention to avert a worsening humanitarian and environmental crisis. (NAN)
