Dr Bashir Kurfi
A group of concerned elders in Katsina State has called for the immediate and unconditional release of security analyst and public affairs commentator, Dr. Bashir Usman Kurfi, describing his arrest and detention as detrimental to ongoing efforts aimed at tackling insecurity in the state.
In a statement signed by Dr. Hassan Garba on behalf of the group, the elders said Dr. Kurfi had played an active role in supporting efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities through sustained engagement with relevant security agencies and key stakeholders.
They said Dr. Kurfi had consistently participated in various forums and initiatives focused on finding lasting solutions to the security challenges confronting Katsina State and the country at large.
According to the group, his continued detention could send “wrong signals” to individuals and organisations collaborating with security agencies by providing information and other forms of support in the fight against insecurity.
The elders urged the Katsina State Government to focus its efforts on apprehending and prosecuting bandits and other criminal elements rather than targeting citizens who contribute ideas, expertise and information towards restoring peace and security.
They therefore appealed to the state government to take immediate steps to ensure the unconditional release of Dr. Kurfi in the interest of peace, security and sustained collaboration among stakeholders working to end banditry.
Members of the concerned elders’ group include Hon. Hamisu Gambo Dan Lawal, Ambassador Sani Bako, Alhaji Abdullahi Hassan, Abubakar Ibrahim, Alhaji Suleiman Halliru and Hon. Jamil Dan Musa. (Daily Trust)
