Dr Bosun Tijani
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the nationwide rollout of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to improve governance, public service delivery and Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Speaking on Thursday at a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the digital postcode would serve as a key national digital infrastructure for smarter governance and efficient service delivery.
Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Nadungu Gagare, Tijani said the initiative would provide reliable location data for government planning and decision-making.
He said the lack of a reliable national addressing system had affected planning, emergency response, financial inclusion, logistics and access to essential public services.
“The Nigerian Digital Postcode is more than an improvement to postal services. It is a strategic national asset that will strengthen governance, enhance security, promote financial inclusion and improve service delivery,” he said.
He urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt a common digital addressing framework to ensure seamless coordination across government institutions.
The Postmaster-General of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Ms Omotola Odeyemi, said the initiative marked the agency’s transition from traditional mail services to digital infrastructure capable of connecting every location in Nigeria.
She explained that the GIS-enabled system assigns every addressable location a unique, machine-readable postcode, enabling the government to deliver services more accurately.
“We are talking about healthcare reaching the right communities, social intervention programmes reaching the right beneficiaries, and improving planning, emergency response and infrastructure development,” she said.
Also speaking, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, represented by Dr Abdul Garba, described the initiative as a strategic tool for improving public administration, transparency and operational efficiency.
The workshop featured technical demonstrations and panel discussions on integrating the digital postcode into sectors including healthcare, education, financial services, elections, social protection and national statistics. (Daily Trust)
