The three Nigerian soldiers, who were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion during a security operation in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, have been laid to rest.

The soldiers lost their lives on Saturday after an IED, suspected to have been planted by bandits, exploded beneath their vehicle in Bargaja community of Isa LGA.

Sources said the troops were responding to a distress call from residents of Bargaja village following an attack by bandits, when the device detonated.

The incident has triggered grief among families and colleagues of the deceased soldiers as well as residents of the affected communities.

Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Engr. Idris Muhammad Gobir, represented Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the funeral prayer held for the fallen soldiers.

Speaking during the ceremony at Giginya Barracks in Sokoto, Gobir condoled with the Nigerian Army and families of the deceased soldiers over the loss, while commending their sacrifice.

“They lost their lives in the line of duty, while protecting the lives and property of the community from the threat of criminal elements.

“We pray that Allah forgives them, grants them Aljannatul Firdausi, and gives their families and the military the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” Gobir said.

He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity.

“The Sokoto State Government continues to stand with our security personnel in the fight against insurgents and bandits. We will keep providing the necessary support to troops to ensure peace returns to our border communities,” he added.

The deputy governor later visited injured personnel and other victims receiving treatment at a hospital, assuring them of the government’s continued support.

Isa LGA lies along the Kamuku-Kuyambana forest belt stretching into Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, an area that has witnessed persistent bandit activities over the years and is known for harbouring armed groups linked to notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji.

The funeral was attended by government officials, military personnel and relatives of the deceased soldiers.

Meanwhile, residents have called for improved patrol equipment and mine-detection technology to help reduce casualties among security personnel operating in the area. (Daily Trust, excluding headline)
