Enugu State Gov Peter Mbah
Youths of Umabor Eha-Alumonah community in Nsukka Local Council of Enugu State have protested what they described as years of neglect by successive governments, lamenting the deteriorating state of public infrastructure in the area.
The protesters appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to include the community in the state’s development agenda, insisting that despite their consistent support for ruling administrations, Umabor had remained largely neglected.
During the protest, the youths highlighted the poor condition of schools, roads and health centres, alleging that repeated appeals for government intervention had yielded little result.
They also warned that politicians seeking votes in the 2027 general elections would not be welcomed in the community, arguing that campaign promises made in the past had not translated into meaningful development.
Speaking on behalf of the Umabor Unity Forum, Emmanuel Uzoh Ugwueze expressed concern over what he described as the worsening condition of public facilities in the community.
“We are deeply pained by the level of deterioration of public infrastructure in our area.
“I recall that even under previous governments we cried out for intervention, but nothing came out of it. Umabor community has suffered neglect for so long, and it is affecting all the public infrastructure in our area.
“All the public facilities in our community are in a deplorable state and require urgent intervention.”
“Apart from the poor condition of schools and other facilities, the state of the Agu-Umabor Road is contributing to the insecurity we are experiencing along that axis.
“We are once again passionately appealing to the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, to hear our cry,” he said.
Meanwhile, some youths of the community have taken to social media to amplify their grievances and call for government intervention.
In a post accompanied by photographs of dilapidated infrastructure, Utonwa Michael appealed to the government to rehabilitate existing schools within the community.
“This is the current state of our primary and secondary schools as of this morning, June 16, 2026.
“While we appreciate the government for the Smart School Project and its commitment to improving education, we passionately appeal for urgent intervention.
“The distance between some of our villages and the Smart Schools is too far, thereby denying many of our children access to quality and accessible education.
“As a result, many children are unable to benefit from these facilities because of the challenges of distance, transportation and safety.
“We respectfully call on the government to rehabilitate existing schools within our communities and ensure that every child, regardless of where they live, has access to quality education close to home.
“Education is a fundamental right, and no child should be disadvantaged simply because of where they reside,” he wrote.
Another indigene of the community, Christian Nnaemeka, also expressed concern over the state of infrastructure in the area.
“The current condition of roads and schools in Umabor, Nsukka Local Council, is far from encouraging.
“As a community, we come out in large numbers during elections and faithfully perform our civic responsibilities. Unfortunately, after elections, it often feels as though Umabor is forgotten.
“Our roads are in poor condition, many of our schools require urgent attention, and security remains a growing concern. These are basic necessities that every community deserves.
“The people of Umabor are becoming increasingly agitated because they believe they deserve better. Development should not only be discussed during campaigns; it should be visible in our roads, schools, healthcare and security.
“This time, our message is clear: leadership must be accompanied by tangible results. We will continue to demand good governance, quality education, improved security and better road infrastructure for our people. Umabor deserves better,” he stated. (The Guardian)
