The Ogun State Government has joined Imo, Kogi and Edo States in banning graduation and end-of-session parties in public and private schools.
The decision is contained in a circular signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, director of Education, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Ministry of Education. The letter was addressed to administrators of all public and private schools.
According to the circular, the ministry received reports that some schools compel parents and guardians to pay various charges under the guise of organising graduation ceremonies and parties.
The ministry said the practice contravenes resolutions reached during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption stakeholders’ meeting in September 2025 in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
A part of the circular reads: “It has been brought to the notice of the Ministry that some Administrators of both public and non-state (private) schools have started extorting parents/guardians under the disguise of organising graduation/end of the session party for learners.
“Therefore, it is pertinent to state that the state government frowns at organising graduation/end-of-session party ceremony in all classes in both public and non-state (private) schools in the state. ‘’Hence, no school owner should organise such gatherings forthwith.
“Note that any school that contravenes this directive will be sanctioned,” it stated. (The Nation)
