South Africa battled back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Czechia in their Group A clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Czechia started strongly and took the lead in the 6th minute when Michal Sadílek finished a well-worked move to put his side ahead.
The early setback forced South Africa to become more adventurous as Bafana Bafana searched for an equaliser, but Czechia continued to threaten on the counter.
South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made important interventions as Czechia attempted to extend their advantage before the break.
The African side improved after the restart, controlling more possession and creating greater pressure around the Czech penalty area.
Their persistence was rewarded late in the match when South Africa were awarded a penalty in the 81st minute.
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the 83rd minute to bring South Africa level.
Czechia pushed for a late winner, while South Africa defended firmly to protect the valuable point.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams still fighting for qualification from Group A.
For South Africa, the result provided a much-needed boost after their opening defeat, while Czechia were left disappointed after missing chances to secure victory. (NAN)
