Nigeria has emerged as the world’s most enthusiastic country about artificial intelligence (AI).
According to the Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report, about 77 per cent of internet users aged 16 and above in Nigeria expressed excitement about AI, the highest globally.
Ghana follows with 73 per cent, while Turkey and Brazil ranked third and fourth respectively.
The trend challenges the long-standing belief that advanced technologies are primarily embraced by developed nations.
Further insights from the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute, based on a survey of over 61,000 respondents across 32 countries, reveal even stronger optimism in Africa.
In both Nigeria and Ghana, 92 per cent of respondents said AI tools are important in their daily lives.
This stands in sharp contrast to countries like the United Kingdom and France, where only 36 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively, share similar views.
Experts attribute the gap to differing perspectives. While developed economies often focus on risks such as job displacement, privacy concerns, and automation, many developing countries see AI as a pathway to opportunity, economic growth, and improved productivity.
This optimism is reflected in broader global attitudes. About 58 per cent of people in the Global South believe AI will create more jobs than it eliminates, compared to just 35 per cent in the Global North.
Saudi Arabia is also rapidly advancing in AI adoption. Reports show that 81 per cent of CEOs in the country have integrated generative AI into their operations within the past year, with expectations of increased efficiency and profitability.
Analysts say countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Brazil are well-positioned to leverage AI to address local challenges in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, finance, and public services.
The data underscores a shifting global narrative: artificial intelligence is no longer driven solely by Western economies. Instead, emerging markets are becoming key players in shaping its adoption and future impact.
As Nigeria leads global enthusiasm rankings, a critical question remains — can Africa transition from being a consumer of AI technologies to becoming a major creator of innovative AI solutions?
