The farmer, Mr Bright Kalu
A farmer, , Bright Kalu, has demanded justice over the killing of his 18-month-old daughter on a farmland at Agoti Settlement in the Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Mr Kalu, who spoke in Akure on Tuesday, said the incident occurred on June 8.
The farmer explained that the deceased was left in the care of her mother at the family’s farm camp while he was working on another farm some distance from the settlement.
“On Monday, June 8, 2026, I was returning from a nearby camp where I had gone to buy food items when I met my wife looking troubled and distressed.
“When I asked what had happened, she told me that someone had come to the camp and attacked her, and that she was able to rescue three of our children, but one was missing. My elder brother, Mr Ifeanyi Kalu, and I immediately followed her to the camp and searched the area.
“We did not find anyone, but we later discovered the lifeless body of my daughter behind our house. Her head had been severed,” he said.
Mr Kalu, who hails from Abia State, called on the government, security agencies and human rights organisations to ensure that the perpetrator of the crime was brought to justice.
He said the matter was reported at the Olofin Police Station in Idanre before being transferred to the State Police Headquarters in Akure for further investigation.
According to him, an arrest has been made in connection with the case.
Also speaking, a pro bono lawyer with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria in Ondo State, Dave Nwokolo, stressed the need for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
Mr Nwokolo condemned the killing, urging the police to diligently pursue the case and ensure successful prosecution of anyone found culpable to serve as deterrent to others.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said that an arrest had been made and investigation ongoing.
Mr Jimoh said that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of investigation. (NAN)
