A petrol station located in Nkwoegwu town, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, was on Sunday night destroyed by a fire outbreak that lasted several hours.

The facility, identified as Aka God Petrol Station, was engulfed by flames following an explosion involving a petrol tanker loaded with fuel within the premises.

The incident, which reportedly began at about 6:30 p.m., triggered panic among residents and business owners in the area as thick smoke and towering flames spread across the station.

Although no casualty was recorded, the inferno destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira within the facility. Some adjoining properties were also partially affected by the fire.

Residents, including youths from the Nkwoegwu community and other sympathisers, initially attempted to contain the fire. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful as repeated bursts of flames from the burning tanker overwhelmed available local firefighting measures.

Officials of the Abia State Fire Service, who were alerted to the incident, arrived at the scene at about 7:00 p.m. and immediately deployed firefighting equipment to combat the blaze.

After hours of intensive operations, the firefighters succeeded in bringing the situation under control and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings, a medical facility, and other structures within the vicinity.

Some residents of Nkwoegwu and other parts of Ohuhu in Umuahia North LGA expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident. However, they lamented the destruction of a major business investment in the community.

Speaking on the development, the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Homeland Security, Fire and Emergency Services, Chukwunenye Alajemba, attributed the successful containment of the fire to the swift response of emergency personnel.

Alajemba said the prompt intervention of his office and the Abia State Fire Service prevented the inferno from spreading to surrounding buildings and causing greater damage.

The exact cause of the tanker explosion has yet to be officially determined, while authorities are expected to conduct further investigations into the incident. (Guardian)
